Many geeks enter, only one leaves...

Most of you, my darling readers, have cottoned on by now to the fact that I'm a geek.  But I'm a bit curious to see which of you out there are also geeks.  Closeted perhaps?  Hiding your love for all things nerdy from your significant others out of fear of them finding out that you know all the words to The Element Song?

Well hide your geeky light under a bushel no longer!

The other day when I was look at some photos in one of my folders, I noticed something that I hadn't realised before.  Apparently my geekiness is much more apparent than I'd realised.  Huh, how did I miss that?  I mean I try to be all professional at work (SmashGirl, stop laughing), keep it all above board and accountanty, but somehow a few teeny little clues to my geeky nature have snuck their way onto my desk.

Here, take a look for yourselves.

But while I was shocked to realise how many geeky things had found their way to work with me over the years, it did give me an awesome idea for a giveaway!

There are, by my count, four distinct geek categories hidden in the stuff on my desk.  And by geek categories, I mean that there are large numbers of people who consider themselves fans of that particular TV show, movie, book or concept, and each of those groups of people have special names for themselves.

Some of them are easier to see than others, but that's the point, isn't it.  To see who out there knows their geeky shit!

Every person who gets them all (or every person who gets the highest number guessed if no one gets all four) will go into a draw to win a $20 gift voucher to ThinkGeek.  I'll draw a winner on Thursday 14th February at 11pm AEST, which is 8am New York time.

Good luck to you all, and may the best geek win!

  1. Hello Kellie:
What a wonderful, fun idea. But you really do not expect us to expose ourselves as true geeks and come out with the top answer, now do you?!!

But good luck to everyone taking part.

    1. I wouldn't dream of assuming you'd give away your geekdom so cheaply! Closet geeks it is then.

  2. The only things I recognize are the Tardis from Dr. Who and the Star Trek mousepad (Next Generation?) The wand on the keyboard could be a reference to Harry Potter, I suppose.

    1. Three out of four! I give you a nine on the geek-o-metre considering the last one is pretty tricky.

  3. I don't think I qualify as a geek as much as an unobservant nerd which is referenced on your quote. I did notice the wand and the Star Trek mouse pad. I don't know what a Tardis is that Debra sees. (I will be Googleing that shortly). Is the rock collection considered geeky? See I am such a nerd I don't know what constitutes geeky.

    1. Lol! So much of a nerd that you don't know what constitutes geeky? That'd make an awesome t shirt!

  4. Dr. Who
    Lord of the Rings
    Star Trek
    Harry Potter (nice wand!)

    1. Three out of four! Good job, but as far as I know I don't have any LOTR stuff on there. What did you see?

  5. I'm more interested in the rocks. What's with all the rocks?

  6. I've told my daughter to marry a geek because they make the best husbands!

  7. I have a house full of geeks. Dr Who is very popular and so is Star Trek. They got bored with Harry Potter somewhere down the line and well Lord of the rings is just a classic whether you are a geek or not. I think previous comments covered them all. Nice post.

  8. You've got a few Dr. Who tardises (tardi?) up there, an HP wand, and a trekkie mouse pad. As for category number four... unless you're into the healing power of crystals with all the rocks you have scattered, I'm stumped. But there's my entry in any case. :)

  9. Mmm what an interesting work desk!!

    Dr Who
    Harry Potter
    Star Trek
(That's how far my geekiness goes!)

  10. I recognize a lot but the only ones I can think of the fanbase names for are:
    Potterheads
    Trekkies
    Ringers?

Lol. Love the post :D You are one cool, geeky lady.

  11. Star Trek (Voyager mouse pad)
Tardis's (one jar? and one in a frame)
A wand clearly from Harry Potter
And is that a dice bag hiding behind the Tardis? If so that would indicate D&D.

As to the all the polished stones...I can't think of a connection.

  13. Star Trek
    Dr Who
    Harry Potter

I'm sure I'm missing something, but it's hard to see the smaller things on the desk. I think there might be a faery or a dragon, but I'm not sure. Also, all those awesome stones and the geo rock.

    Hugs!

  14. I will go one step further:
    Star Trek Voyager (specifics count)
The John Green quote (author of Looking for Alaska and other things I've never heard of
Two versions of the TARDIS (Matt Smith's, and there's a small picture which I can only assume is pre-Eccleston)
And it looks like Hermione Granger's wand.
Unfortunately, I can't quite tell what that pad is under the keyboard. But still, nice. You are owed a raise.

  16. I saw a Star Trek Voyager mousepad--I liked Janeway was just mad she got lost for the whole freaking show. A wand I'm assuming is from Harry Potter. Two kick butt Tardis--I like the blue one best. And the pouch which I guess could be from Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter not sure. I thankfully did not see any sparkly vampire stuff so that's good.

  17. I see the Harry Potter wand and the Tardis from Doctor Who :) I have a feeling the mouse-pad is something of significance though I'm not geeky enough to know what is significant about it, or geeky enough to spot the fourth thing. Hahaha :)

  18. I am not sure why I am even doing this - but the Police Station/jar/box thing first got my eye - because I am police disptacher. Would like one of those for my desk. I did see the wand - even tho I have never seen a HP movie. Star Trek mouse pad - that is from my generation and love the John Green quote. Soooooooooo - if you decide you need to clean up your GEEKY desk....send that adorable police thing my way!!

  20. Hi Kellie, I chose you for a Liebster award. I was chosen, and I'm passing it on to you. The details are on my latest blog post: http://www.therealyetisaurus.com/2013/02/accidental-lesbians-and-liebster-award.html. Basically, the rules are:
    1. Each blogger should post 11 random facts about themselves.
    2. Answer the questions the tagger has set for you, and then create 11 new questions for the bloggers you pass the award to.
    3. Choose 11 new bloggers (with less than 200 followers) to pass the award to and link them in your post.
    4. Go back to their page and tell them about the award.
    5. No tag backs.

The questions are listed in my blog post.

  21. Oh Darn, I can't enter this one. Maybe you should have run another competition alongside this one, for the least geek answer $100 would have been great...

  22. Hah awesome collection. Where did you get the Voyager mousemat? Not that I've space for a mousemat, but a girl can dream.

So, along with everyone else I've spotted the three obvious ones (by the way, it's Trekker, folks) and am wondering if the last is, in fact, geology, due to all the semi-precious stones around the place. If so, the theoretical physics dept. will have something to say about it...
