If I'd known how much money there was to be made in World of Warcraft, I wouldn't have suspended my account...

I was always lead to believe that gold farming in World Of Warcraft wasn't a particularly lucrative career.  Don't they always say that Chinese gold farmers make thirty cents an hour or something equally horrendous?

But it turns out there is a way to make a living from playing computer games after all ... although I wouldn't recommend converting said living into gold bullion and storing it in your house.  Really, you're just asking for robbers to come knocking.

  2. I first heard about the term "gold farming" when I read "For the Win" by Cory Doctorow. If you're looking for a good book to read, I highly recommend it.

    1. Yep, and there's even a player v's player competition element, so some people make money competing with that.

    1. I know it was up around the 11 million users at its peak, and it's since dropped down to around 7 million, but that's still one hell of a customer base.

  7. My wife used to play WOW. She was a guild master, top level, had great equipment, etc. When she finally got bored of it she sold her account for $1500, which was way more than she'd ever paid to play it. In other words, she was basically paid to play the game.

    1. I've heard of people doing that. Starting accounts, levelling a character to end game, then selling the account. I think the highest amount I ever heard someone pay for an account was five grand.
