Who knew those Ivy Leaguers were so kinky...

Source
As much as I hated the book, I have to admit I'm loving the trends that have developed as a result of the whole "Fifty Shades" phenomena.

People are reading smut on public transport, something I heartily endorse.  Sex shops are selling "Fifty Shades" inspired kits, full of ridiculously overpriced and utterly hilarious sexual aids like fur lined handcuffs and crappy faux leather collars.  Hell, the UK are even attributing the fact that they got out of the recession to sales of the book and the related sales of merchandise and sex toys!

This, my friends is what we call a sexual revolution.

So when I read about how Harvard University now has an officially endorsed BDSM club [link], I was wasn't really surprised.  Amused, but not really surprised.  It really was only a matter of time, wasn't it?  What with the current fascination with all things kinky, this was bound to happen eventually.

Although if I was betting on a university officially endorsing a kinky club for the first time, my money would have been on Oxford.  What with the Brits' proclivity towards secret societies and kinkiness in general I would have sworn that's be right up their alley.

I've watched almost every "Carry On" film that's every been made and I'm a Benny Hill fan from way back, I know what I'm talking about.

But in all seriousness, I do think it's a good thing.  If clubs like this can allow people with a particular interest to connect in a way that's safe and more about the community aspect than about the sex, then good for them!

Let your freak flags fly, you crazy cats!

  3. As a kinkster, this makes me sad I cannot afford college, let alone have the smarts to get into Harvard. LOL I think it's great that it's becoming more 'acceptable', but 'acceptable' at the hands of a book trilogy that really promoted domestic violence/abuse cloaked as a D/s relationship is what really gets under my skin and makes me grrr.

    1. I never read the books, but know friends who are into kink who did and said it should have been called "Fifty Shades of Dysfunction". As a kinkster myself, I worry that this book gives a false impression about what BDSM and its milder forms are all about. I also worry that this reinforces the belief that kink = abuse. Plus, the excerpts I've read are truly awful. There is MUCH MUCH MUCH better kink lit out there.

    2. There is definitely better kink lit out there! Of course it wouldn't be hard, given how badly written Fifty Shades was.

  5. I picked up and randomly read a page of "fifty shades" last summer when I was on vacation with a group of friends (one of the girls brought it and had it on the table). I had no idea what it was about...you can imagine my surprise when the first page I randomly turned to would be one that would make a sailor blush!

    1. We used to do that at work with the "black lace" novels. During shelving if one of us found one we had to open it randomly in three spots and read out loud whatever we found.

  6. Haven't read the book but from what I've heard I doubt that I'm the target audience.

  8. What will Yale do to counter? Have an officially endorsed Marijuana course? Pot growing 101.

  9. Hated the "50 Shades" and I can tell you one thing. This old bird has had an interesting life and thought the book was tame. Just sayin'.

  12. Funny, I would have guessed a more liberal country altogether - maybe New Zealand or Australia, before Oxford.
